Self-care is hard to come by in my life, as I imagine it is for most of the people reading this. When I’m not in class or at internship, I’m at my job at Pembroke Hospital. 90% of my week is spent doing some form of work, either at the hospital, in class, at home for class, or at internship. In fact, this was the first week where I actually requested work time off so I could get homework done. Three classes might not seem like a lot, but between capstone, my elective (this class), and internship seminar, I’m feeling pretty worn out. Right now I’m really looking forward to having more time to read a book, watch a movie, or play with my dog.
We know that self-care is an important part of our daily routine. So I want to share with you some of the things I’ve done this week for self-care, and things I plan to do to keep myself sane during this stressful time in my life. (Only three months left! Counting down!)
Last week was actually a pretty busy week for me. I had spent the weekend with my boyfriend, watching the Patriots and going to the Bruins home opener. (One of these things was good.) Even though my week started with the awesomeness of being with the man I love and doing fun, exciting things, I stupidly did not do much homework. That made this week especially stressful. But I did make time to go to the gym at least once.
The gym is big self-care for me. Not only am I trying to lose some weight and get healthy, but it gives me some time to blow off frustrations from the week. I also interact with a lot of fabulous women during my time there. They keep my spirits high.
I have to admit, my go-to self care “thing” is napping. I think people would argue that this could be a bad thing, but when I get home from internship and have a few extra hours, I’ll snuggle up and take a nap. The only downside is that I wake up groggy, but that’s okay. It’s a great way to unwind.
I love to read and write. When I have the time, I try to get this in. Usually over vacations I have more actual time. There is nothing like diving into someone else’s story, or writing your own, like blasting off to a new world where this is no homework or work work. It’s just free expression.
Friends are big when it comes to self-care. Yesterday I was working on my capstone and got a call from my best friend. Of course we went out, just to dinner, but it was great to get off my computer for a couple of hours and shoot the shit with her.
Finally, and obviously, my main form of self-care is seeing my boyfriend. He lives about an hour and a half away from me, so we see one another rarely. This is good and bad, mostly because I have time to work and not get distracted by him, but that I never get to see him. When I do, it’s like my whole soul calms down. There is nothing better than being in the arms of the person who supports you completely. So he is my favorite form of self-care. And I get to see him on Tuesday for our weekly date night and the upcoming weekend, because I don’t have to work! Woo-hoo!
I forsee the following week being full of naps, long jogs at the gym, and seeing my boyfriend as my top three self-care experiences.
